Mobility poverty prevents people from fully participating in society. Cities and municipalities want to tackle the problem, but struggle to identify and solve it. During this CIVINET .BE workshop, we will reflect on methodologies and local solutions to improve inclusion in mobility policies.

Mobility poverty as a complex issue

Mobility poverty is a challenge for cities and municipalities. Due to a lack of money, knowledge, facilities or skills, some people do not get smoothly to their work, shop, childcare, family, sports club or doctor. These people live in mobility poverty and therefore cannot actively participate in society, resulting in loneliness and social exclusion.

Many local governments want to tackle the problem, but struggle with how to identify mobility poverty and find targeted solutions. What data and methodologies are useful? And how do you make sure more people get where they want to get?

During a CIVINET .BE workshop on Thursday 19 June (9-13h), we will actively work with insights and tools from the European project Mainstreaming Equality. In that project, Mobiel 21 developed training courses to improve inclusion within DG Move and European mobility policy. We look at how you can apply relevant methodologies locally and think together about solutions for specific challenges in your city or municipality. We will conclude with a nice lunch. So be sure to attend.

Participation in the workshop is free of charge. Language of communication is English. The number of places is limited. So register today.

What can you expect?

  • Insights into mobility poverty: what is it, how does it manifest itself and what factors play a role?
  • Practical methodologies to address mobility poverty.
  • Exercises reflecting on concrete solutions to local challenges.
  • Exchange of knowledge and experiences with other cities and municipalities.

Via the registration link, you can also submit your own topics that you would like to see addressed.

Other CIVINET activities in 2025

Besides this workshop, CIVINET .BE is planning other activities this year, based on the input we received from cities and municipalities. These include a site visit to Sint-Niklaas in September around parking management and UVAR. You can already register for that event now. Do so today, as places are limited.

What is CIVINET .BE?
