Recommendations for policymakers

30 Days Less Car proved that people are indeed open to a sustainable modal shift. Almost half of the participants said they were willing to continue their new, good habits after June. Therefore, we direct these three recommendations to policymakers:

  • Give people a simple way to get a taste of sustainable mobility and inform them extensively about the possibilities.
  • Give people a simple way to get a taste of sustainable mobility and inform them in detail about the possibilities.
  • Invest in a wide range of public transport and shared-mobility systems.

From 30 days to 365 days less car

Car use has a major impact on health, space use, environment and infrastructure. Moreover, the use and number of cars are still increasing. To efficiently tackle the greatest social challenge of the 21st century, we need not 6,509 but millions of Flemish people to start driving as many Days Less Car as possible.

If we want people to move radically differently, we also need an equally radical switch in mobility policy. As a policy-maker, you can help ensure that sustainable transport becomes synonymous with affordable, reliable, efficient, safe and comfortable and not just 'good for the environment'. If we want to protect the quality of life of future generations, there is no other option.
