Mobility poverty is a reality for a lot of people in Belgium. If the only bus that was in the village is abolished, you no longer manage to get to work, and you also lose an important connection with the rest of the society. You are then literally left behind. During this conference we would like to discuss this social debate further with you.

Course of the day

  • 09.00 - 09.30 | Reception
  • 09. 30 - 10.30 h | Inequalities in mobility (plenary session) | In this section, the Interfederal Poverty Reduction Centre presents its material on poverty and mobility. We look at various inequalities in our society with regard to mobility, concrete problems experienced by people living in poverty in their movements, and how this has an impact in other domains and on various fundamental rights.
  • 10:30 - 11:00 | Break
  • 11:00 - 12:00 | Parallel sessions by the participating advisory councils
    • Session 1 | How to eliminate mobility poverty | In this session, the Mobility Council of Flanders will present its recent advice on mobility poverty
    • Session 2 | The role of alternatives to the private car in tackling mobility poverty | This session is organised by the Centrale Raad voor het Bedrijfsleven and takes a closer look at alternative forms of mobility that are less expensive than the private car (e.g. car sharing, ride sharing, cycling) and their role in combating mobility poverty.
    • Session 3 | What do we know about mobility poverty in Belgium | In this session, organised by FRDO, Jan Velghe (BV-OECO) will present his study on transport poverty in Belgium.
  • 12.00 - 12.10 hrs | Return to the plenary room
  • 12.10 - 13.00 | Recommendations for a policy that can prevent mobility poverty (plenary session) | In this concluding session, we start with a short reaction to the discussions in the different sub-sessions. Afterwards, there will be a panel discussion with some experts. They will talk about policies that can prevent mobility poverty.
