No job without a car?
Figures show it: if you don't have a car, it's harder to find a job. Mobiel 21 investigated what transport poverty does when looking for work. Turns out that 1 in 3 jobseekers just don't get to the workplace.
The Flemish Region had an average of 177,956 jobseekers without work (WZW) in 2022. For one third of these, household income is below the poverty risk threshold. And that while 'work is undeniably an important buffer against poverty', according to the Flemish Poverty Monitor.
But what if poverty itself is an impeding factor in getting work? Research by Mobiel 21 shows that transport poverty - poverty due to the lack of mobility opportunities - disadvantages a large group of jobseekers when looking for work.
