Cycle Skillz

Mobility for everyone

Cycling is a popular way to commute, but it also carries risks. The Cycle Skillz project therefore focuses on promoting safe cycling amongst employees of shelterd workshops and service voucher companies.

Through free workshops, employees learn how to recognise traffic hazards, avoid risks and cycle with confidence. By helping employees understand their own cycling behaviour, the project reduces their risk of accidents and absenteeism, whilst ensuring they stay active on their journeys to and from work.

Better cycling skills, fewer risks

Cycling to and from work, or from one client to another, is popular amongst employees of cleaning agencies, service voucher companies and sheltered workshops. This is a positive development, as cycling is sustainable and healthy.

However, cycling in traffic is challenging and also carries risks. More employees cycling also means a greater risk of cycling accidents, injuries and, consequently, absenteeism. These are often single-vehicle accidents, involving only the cyclist themselves.

To specifically improve these skills amongst employees, and thus reduce the number of accidents, Mobiel 21’s De Fietsschool is offering the free ‘Safe Cycling’ workshop this year as part of the Cycle Skillz project. We developed this workshop for all cyclists, including those who are less proficient in Dutch or who need extra support.

What is safe cycling?

In our workshop, we work with employees to take a close look at their cycling skills, cycling behaviour and decision-making in traffic. Participants learn how to avoid major risks by making small adjustments to their riding style. We go over the traffic rules again in easy-to-understand language. This helps ensure that people feel safer when cycling in traffic. After all, cycling safely means learning to assess traffic, applying the traffic code correctly, identifying hazards in good time and adapting your cycling behaviour accordingly.

Why this workshop?

  • Improves worker safety
  • Reduces the risk of accidents and absenteeism
  • Boosts self-confidence and is good for body and mind
  • Identifies bottlenecks and hazardous traffic situations in the vicinity of the companies
  • Ideal for employees who cycle to work every day

"Our staff were absolutely thrilled with the workshop run by De Fietsschool in October 2025. They’re still talking about it."

Workshop content

The workshop consists of four parts. These theoretical and practical parts complement one another. Experienced instructors from De Fietsschool will visit your office, business or organisation to deliver the workshop.

The workshop also includes a bottleneck analysis using PING. This analysis helps companies improve cycling safety in the workplace. Using the citizen science tool PING, employees themselves identify bottlenecks and hazardous situations on their journey to and from work, in a very accessible way.

Those PING data provide companies with a clear picture of common risks. This enables them to focus specifically on prevention and re-routing, or to engage in dialogue with their local council to tackle problem areas. A unique opportunity!

Theory

  • Part 1: Cycling safely, with practical tips & tricks for recognising risks, reacting sensibly and cycling with confidence.
  • Part 2: Traffic Code for cyclists, with a clear explanation of the most important traffic rules that every cyclist needs to know.
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Maximum 20 participants
  • Requirements: a room with a projector and chairs
  • It’s also handy to have a bike in the room to help visualise things

Practice

  • Part 3: Preparing for a bottleneck analysis using PING; we’ll install the PING button and explain how it works.
  • Part 4: Cycling safely on the road, based on a cycle ride in the local area
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Maximum of 20 participants
  • Each participant should bring their own smartphone
  • Each participant must have a bicycle

Free of charge, fully tailored to your employees’ needs

Thanks to support from the FPS Mobility and Transport through the Cycle Skillz project, Mobiel 21’s Cycling School is able to offer the workshop and bottleneck analysis with PING free of charge this year to cleaning agencies, service voucher organisations and social enterprises.

Mobiel 21 also holds the WSE quality label awarded by the Flemish Government and is therefore a recognised service provider within the policy areas of Work & Social Economy.
