Higher Education
A lot of students already enjoy extra benefits when choosing an environment-friendly mode of transport. For example, many cities offer students rental bikes at a very low price. Other students get a free bus pass. There are staff members who can get a free bike in exchange for handing in their parking card. In sum, these initiatives prove that universities' concern for sustainable mobility and accessibility is growing. They want to stimulate students and staff to walk, cycle, car-pool or use public transport to get to campus.
How can people get to campus in a safe and environment-friendly way? Are there complaints about overcrowded buses and inadequate timetables? Does a certain campus have parking space issues? Do students and staff want more information about sustainable transport alternatives? Drawing up a Transport Plan can help solve these issues.
A Transport Plan contains initiatives and projects with regard to informing, raising awareness, prevention, infrastructure and transport organisation. Some examples are:
- Spreading information on a set of sustainable transport modes for reaching your campus.
- Actively promoting sustainable means of transport on the university's website, in information brochures, on intranet and/or during open days.
- Setting up a system of student bikes or making the current system more efficient.
- Organising commuter bicycles and/or shuttle busses to and from the train station and your campus.
- Developing and implementing strict parking space management.
- Building a closed off and covered bike shed with showers and locker rooms.
- Actively working together with bicycle associations.
- Entering a bicycle campaign.
- Adjusting the infrastructure near unsafe traffic spots in and around the campus.
- Consulting the city or town authorities, public transport organisations and associations, bicycle and mobility organisations... for working on projects or initiatives together.
Mobiel 21 offers guidance, on demand and in close collaboration with the parties concerned, in drawing up a Transport Plan. Outlining a mobility and accessibility profile is the first step in the process. Drawing up an actual action plan with initiatives and projects is the next step. We also refer people to specialised organisations that can help them implement concrete actions or we help people find partners for their projects. Interested in our guidance?
