Bicycle Friends - On the Road Together!
Flanders, 2007 - present
Bicycle Friends is a project that wants to offer migrant women more cycling experience. For most people, cycling is a skill they acquired during infancy and has now become a simple and cheap way of travelling. There are however, still many adults who cannot - or can barely - ride a bicycle. It is mostly migrants and senior citizens who experience difficulties cycling.
The Bicycle Friends project works as follows: an experienced cyclist and a 'new cyclist' are introduced to each other. Together they go on fun cycling trips. The concept offers mutual benefits, the student-cyclist gains confidence in traffic and both the participants can enjoy a pleasant and mobile activity. There is a local project team that supports the bicycle friends by organising an acquaintance moment, dusting off the participant's knowledge of the traffic rules, organising a big cycling tour with a pick nick, etc.
In Leuven, the project is very successful. This is partly due to the fact that the integration services fully support the bicycle friends programme. Gradually, more and more Flemish cities are joining. Currently, Asse-Zellik, Antwerp-Deurne and Genk have started up a Bicycle Friends project.
